If you live in New England, you’re likely no stranger to mice in your home. There’s always an uptick in rodent control calls for us this time of year because mice need a warm place to survive Winter. Spiders and larger cockroach species, on the other hand, have likely been nearby, in woodpiles and basements. An increase in sightings can be for a few reasons but the simplest is that we spend more time in our homes when it’s cold outside.

Preventing pests goes a long way

To keep pest infestations from getting out of hand very quickly, there are things you can do right now for winter pest control. Here are some quick tips:

• These pests love wet, warm areas around the home. Eliminate all moisture sites, including leaking pipes and standing water. These spots provide the perfect breeding site for pests.
• Store food and pantry items in durable, airtight containers. Dispose of food waste regularly.
• Don’t leave pet food out overnight when these pests are most active.
• Install door sweeps on doors with outside access and repair damaged windows and screens.
• Seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home. Pay special attention to areas where utilities, like cable, and pipes enter the home.
• Keep attics, basements, and crawl spaces well ventilated. Run dehumidifiers if necessary to keep them dry.
• Repair cracked mortar on the foundation and stone steps. Update weather stripping around the basement foundation and windows.
• Inspect items coming into your home, like grocery bags and other packages,  before bringing them inside. Unpacking seasonal decorations outdoors—they’ve sat dormant for a long time!
