It’s happened to all of us: you’re having a nice evening outdoors in the summer or early fall, maybe relaxing at a barbecue or bonfire, when the itching starts! Mosquitoes are out for blood, and while you’re enjoying the outdoors, the little buzzers are enjoying you!
Despite the annoying itchy bump, most mosquito bites are harmless and will get better in a couple of days. But that doesn’t mean you have to suffer until the itching goes away on its own! Here are some remedies for mosquito bites you can try to help alleviate your itchy situation:
Topical and oral antihistamines are often overlooked when it comes to treating mosquito bites. Antihistamines can be extremely effective at treating swelling and itching. If you have mosquito-bite sensitivities, it may be helpful to take an oral antihistamine a few hours before going to an area where you’re likely to be bitten.
Never underestimate the power of an ice pack! Cold temperatures and ice can reduce inflammation and swelling, as well as temporarily numb the skin. An ice pack on your mosquito bites can give you some temporary but much-needed relief!
Both calamine lotion and over-the-counter hydrocortisone ointment have a soothing effect on itchy or painful skin. If you have mildly itchy bites, these might help.
Perhaps you don’t want to use over-the-counter medication, and ice hasn’t worked. You could look into some other home remedies, such as oatmeal, aloe, honey, apple cider vinegar, or baking soda.
This mosquito season, give some of these remedies for mosquito bites a try. And remember: as tempting as it might be, don’t scratch your bites! Scratching might create an open sore that will allow bacteria in and cause an infection. If you suspect infected bites or a mosquito-borne illness such as West Nile Virus, see your doctor immediately.
