Can you recognize the signs of termites?

Termites can cause severe structural damage to your home, and it’s important to catch them quickly once they get inside. In many cases, however, termites can live in your home for a long time without being detected. That’s why it’s crucial for all homeowners to know the subtle signs of termite activity.

Top 5 Signs of a Termite Infestation

  1. Discarded wings near windows and doors can often be the only outwardly visible sign of a termite infestation.

  2. Subterranean termites build mud tubes near the foundation of the home to maintain moisture and provide protection. They use it to travel between the colony and the food source, aka your home!
  3. Wood that sounds hollow when tapped on and feels soft, or appears darker.
  4. Uneven or bubbled paint can usually mean one of two things: water damage or a termite infestation.
  5. Note: The sudden arrival of a horde of flying ants may really be the reproductive (swarmer) form of a termite!  See our bonus tip below.

In addition to these common signs, you should also be on the lookout for loosening floor or wall tiles, stuck windows or doors, and buckling floorboards.

Bonus Tip:

How can you tell the difference between flying ants and winged termite swarmers? At first glance, they look very similar. Look closely and you’ll be able to tell the difference:

Winged termite swarmers have:

  1. Straight antennae
  2. Equal length wings
  3. Straight waist

Flying ants have:

  1. Bent antennae
  2. Unequal-length wings (front vs. back)
  3. Pinched Waist
