It’s the holiday season in New England, meaning people across Western Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut are adorning their homes with trees, wreaths, garlands, and other festive decorations. But wait, Santa won’t be here until the 24th, so what are those noises coming from the chimney? With all the decorations coming from the basement, attic, and outdoors, you might accidentally let in a pest infestation! So how do you win the neighborhood decorating contest but prevent the rodents and bugs from cramping your holiday style? Check out our tips on how to pest-proof your holiday decor!

How to Pest-Proof Your Holiday Decor

Greenery

Trees and wreaths, when brought in from outdoors, can harbor pests. Be sure to:

• Check greenery for pests, birds nests, and egg casings– the eggs, dormant due to the cold outside, can hatch inside your warm home!!
• Give fresh-cut trees a good shake before bringing them inside to remove any lingering spiders, ticks, or ants.
• Discard the tree away from your home, as it can attract mice and other pests.

Other Decor

You probably kept your non-greenery holiday decor packed away in the attic or basement– ideal pest habitats. Make sure you:

• Inspect before you unpack! Before bringing these boxes and decorations into the main living areas, check the boxes thoroughly for any pests or signs of pests (e.g. gnaw marks). It may even be better to unpack them outside.
• When packing the decorations away for next year, try using durable containers with tight-fitting lids to keep any pests out!

Firewood

Nothing beats a cozy fireplace on a cold winter night! If you’re planning on bringing some wood inside for a fire, it’s important to:

• Inspect pieces of wood before bringing them in. Spiders, termites and ants can easily hitch a ride.
• Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the home.
