It's Possible Pests Could Be Causing Your Indoor Allergies

Written by Brenda | May 28, 2020 4:00:00 AM

Some very common indoor allergies include dust, mold, and animal hair or dander. Lesser-known indoor allergies can be brought on by unexpected pests. Cockroach and rodent droppings can bring on allergy symptoms as strongly as—or stronger than—more common allergens. Homeowners in Springfield Massachusetts, Hartford, and Enfield Connecticut are taking measures to avoid these pests.  We are going to cover how to tell the difference and what you can do about confirming and preventing pest-associated allergens.

Are Pests Triggering My Indoor Allergies?

According to the National Pest Management Association, pest-caused allergies can result in “coughing (especially at night), wheezing, chest tightness, or pressure, and shortness of breath.” If your symptoms include any of the previous, you should begin to inspect your home for signs of pests. The most obvious sign of having a pest infestation is seeing one scurry by!  The next most common is finding its feces. Rodents and cockroaches can be identified by their droppings, which can be a major cause of indoor allergies.

What Can I Do to Prevent Pest-Caused Allergies?

Clean Your Kitchen

Cockroaches and rodents will scavenge food most commonly in the kitchen or wherever food is stored. It’s crucial to remove easily accessible food by storing it in airtight containers and cleaning any remnants from floors and surfaces.

Vacuum

While useful in removing crumbs and other food sources, vacuuming also removes the particulates that actually cause indoor allergies. This includes droppings, decomposing body parts, and dust mites. Be sure to vacuum low-traffic areas thoroughly such as spaces, behind furniture and around vents.

Do Laundry

Dust mites are often found in sheets and pillowcases. This is a major cause of night allergies because of the proximity to your mouth and nose. The simplest solution is to frequently wash your linens. However, allergen-proof bedding is an option. It is still strongly recommended you do your laundry regularly.

Dehumidify Your Home

A damp house can exacerbate indoor allergies. Dust mites thrive in moist environments. Have ventilation systems serviced regularly, fix any leaks, and run a dehumidifier where necessary. This will improve air quality as well.

Remove Access

Rodents can easily infiltrate your home through cracks and gaps in foundation, siding, and windows. This can be especially troubling in winter when pests will seek refuge from cold weather. Caulk and seal any cracks and gaps that would grant pests access to your home.

Hire a Pro

Indoor pests can be troublesome, even if you follow all of the above. The best chance at success in eliminating pest-induced indoor allergens is to hire professionals to perform the preventative treatment.
