West Nile Virus Symptoms: Am I Infected?
Mosquito season is in full swing! If you’re one of the many New Englanders enjoying summer weather, then you’ve probably already gotten a few (or more) mosquito bites. Most of us are aware that West Nile Virus poses a threat. But how exactly can you tell if you’ve been infected with it? Here’s what residents of Springfield, Enfield, and the surrounding areas need to know about West Nile Virus symptoms.
West Nile Virus Symptoms
Firstly, it’s important to note that the majority of people infected with West Nile don’t develop any symptoms at all. The virus will typically clear from the body in a few days without causing any ill-effects.
Mild Infection
Approximately 20 percent of people infected with the virus get a mild infection, with symptoms including:
- Fever
- Headache
- Body aches
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Fatigue
- Skin rash
These West Nile Virus symptoms should resolve on their own within a few days. As always, however, see a doctor if your condition worsens.
Serious Infection
Less than 1 percent of people infected with the virus get a serious infection. This can lead to a lasting neurological condition. These symptoms include:
- High fever
- Severe headache
- Stiff neck
- Disorientation or confusion
- Stupor or coma
- Tremors or muscle jerking
- Seizures
- Partial paralysis or muscle weakness
Because these symptoms can linger for weeks or even be permanent, West Nile is still a potential health risk. Therefore, if you suspect you have a serious case of the virus, seek medical attention immediately.
